MITT2002 - A productive week for the Russian & CIS travel industry

The key players of the Russian & CIS travel and tourism markets marked the opening of the tourism season with a very successful participation at the 9th edition of MITT (Moscow International Travel & Tourism exhibition), at the Krasnaya Presnya Expocentr, Moscow. The exhibition was part of a week of activities focused on the travel and tourism industry in this rapidly developing region.
Ecotourism Seminar organised by the WTO (World Tourism Organization) - 25th - 26th March
In the framework of the International Year of Ecotourism designated by the United Nations, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation organised a seminar on Ecotourism, a Tool for Sustainable Development in the 21st Century in the Transitional Economies of the CIS countries. It was held in the Golden Ring Hotel, Moscow and was attended by 80 participants representing central and local authorities, ecotourism companies and NGOs from 40 Russian administrative regions, from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Ukraine as well from Hungary and Slovakia.

MITT2002 - the leading travel & tourism exhibition in Russia & CIS
MITT2002 was opened on the 27th March by a panel of distinguished speakers including: Ms. Matviyenko, Vice Premier of the Federal Government of the Russian Federation; Mr. Strzhalkovsky, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation; Mr. Neradko, First Deputy of the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation; Dr. de Villiers, Deputy Secretary General, World Tourism Organization. Besides numerous Russian VIP guests from local and national government organisations attending the opening ceremony, there were international delegations including Ambassadors and Ministerial officials from over 50 countries world-wide.

In total, the 29,000m2 of the exhibition hosted over 2,250 companies from 103 countries and regions including newcomers like Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Morocco, Oman, Peru & Sharjah. Visitor figures were also strong with over 70,000 registered visitors and nearly 41,000 non-registered visitors. Feedback from the participants is very positive and the continued support of the Russian & CIS markets through the recent tragic events since September 2001 was lauded and appreciated by all international exhibitors.

"Time to Visit Russia"- conference on international inbound and domestic tourism
During MITT on the 28th March, the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, RATA and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation organised a conference which tackled the topics of international inbound and domestic tourism. Speakers included Ms. Shenguelia, Head of the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation, Mr. Kotenev, Director of the Consulate Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Shpilko, President of RATA among others.

Russian Travel Awards - Recognising Excellence in the Travel & Tourism Industry
The 4th Russian Travel Awards ceremony took place at the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski during the Gala Evening reception for exhibitors and invited guests. The awards were presented to the winners by honoured guests among whom were Mr. Strjalkovsky, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation, Ms. Shenguelia, Head of the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation, Mr. Coates, Chairman of cecta, as well as Mr. Weber of Hertz, who presented the award for the Best Russian Travel Agency, which was sponsored by his company. Winners of the awards include: GREENEX for the Best Russian Travel Agency; Academservice DMC for the Best Russian Inbound Tour Operator, Grand Hotel Europe St. Petersburg, Kempinski for the Best Russian Hotel in Moscow and St. Petersburg; Le Meridien Hotels & Resorts for the Best International Hotel Group; the Tourism Authority of Thailand for the Best National Tourist Office in Russia. The awards are organised by ITE Travel Exhibitions in conjunction with TTG Russia.
