A silly name for a restaurant, but good introduction to Cantonese dim sum lunch. Busy and lively like all Cantonese restaurants. Best experienced with a Cantonese speaker who can recommend some dishes more suitable for Westerners.

Very good selection of Chinese dumplings in clean pleasant surroundings. Good for a quick lunch.

Dynasty Restaurant
Renaissance Harbour View Hotel
3/f 1 Harbour Road
Wan Chai

Very up market Chinese food. Well served in very pleasant surroundings over-looking the harbour. The food is good but you can get similar elsewhere for a lot cheaper. Good for entertaining on expenses.

Golden Snow Garden Restaurant

26 Harbour Road
Wan Chai
Tel: 2827 2200

Good Cantonese menu. Pleasant atmosphere.

Jumbo's Floating Restaurant
Aberdeen

Just ask the taxi driver for Aberdeen and he will assume you are going to Jumbo's. Three floating restaurants serving bog-standard Cantonese food. Very touristy. Go at night for the spectacular lighting and the fun atmosphere. If the food is enjoyable, it's an extra bonus. It may not be Chinese, but the baked Alaska is recommended.

King Heung Restaurant
59-65 Paterson Street
Causeway Bay
Tel: 2577 105,2576 7899

Excellent Peking style food in pleasant surroundings. The Peking duck is good but expensive. Also try the chicken and walnuts, and the Tianjin ham and cabbage.

More good Cantonese food in Wan Chai. No frills décor.

Shanghai Po Kong

Tel: 2834 4128

Down market surroundings but the food is good. Not really Shanghai cuisine, more a mixture of all types of Chinese food.

City Chiu Chow Hong Kong
1/F and 2/F Allied Kajima Building
138 Gloucester Road
Tel: 25987 4333/4827

Found by going up onto the walkway near the Century Hotel. It's on your left as you reach the very top. Very good Chiu chow food; more delicate than other styles of Chinese cuisine, except the tea which is served in thimble-sized cups and will dissolve your fillings! Especially good for entertaining groups of friends in private rooms.

Mandarin House
1/F Yue Xiu Building
160 - 174 Lockhart Road
Wan Chai
Tel: 2511 4362

Another basic venue serving good standard Peking food and the rest.

CHINESE - KOWLOON

Lei Garden Restaurant
B2 Houston Centre
Tsim Sha Tsui
Tel: 2722 1636

Serves good Cantonese food. Walk into the Houston Centre and a group of hostesses will pounce on you and lead you to the basement. The restaurant décor is good and the service is attentive. The menu is more limited than most Cantonese restaurants but is definitely worth a visit. Try the corn and crab meat soup, mixed vegetables and Chinese ham, sliced fried beef and even the sweet and sour pork.

Shanghai Number One Restaurant
Shop Nos. 9 & 10
G/F Hart Avenue Plaza
5 - 9 Hart Avenue
Tel: 2316 2517

Especially good Shanghai cuisine. Simple pleasant family restaurant with no frills. Try the fried dumplings (gou tie *) or the steamed small dragon dumplings (xiao long bao). The aubergine dishes are good as well.
* pronounced goor tea air

Temple Street Market
Off Jordon Road
Jordon

Walk down Jordon Road to the night market. In the middle of the market is an open seating area serving freshly cooked seafood. Great fun, but the official Hong Kong guide books stress that you should have had the hepatitis injections first. A wise precaution but it is still worth going.
Watch out for the Pick Pockets!

Sun Heung Cheung Peking Restaurant
2/F 45 Kimberly Raod
Tsim Sha Tsui
Tel: 2369 3485

Peking cuisine mainly. The Peking hotpot is recommended. Also does Mongolian barbecue.
