St Petersburg is located at the mouth of the Neva River, and across the islands of its delta on the coast of the Finnish Gulf of the Baltic Sea.

This young city which was founded in 1703, was conceived by Peter the Great as "a window of Europe", as the capital of a "young Russia". Like the "second cities" around the world, such

as Florence, Munich, New York or Seville, St Petersburg has preserved its fame and importance, even after losing their official status. St Petersburg, however, has been built as a capital.

Named the Venice of the North, this beautiful city has its own literature, mythology and art. The streets and squares of St Petersburg,its embankments, bridges, monuments and famous palaces are reminders of the last decades of the 18th century and 19th century.
