Ukraine - situated to the North of the
Black Sea, it borders Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary,
Romania and Moldova, positioning it at the heart of Central Europe

| Independence in 1991 renewed the country's capital,
Kiev, as a major European capital. The city is located along the Dniper
River 591 miles (952 km) from the mouth of the Black Sea. The focus
of this contemporary city is the Upper Town whereit is dominated by
the 11th century cathedral of St Sophia and the 18th century Baroque
church of St Andrew, both of which are now state museums. Nearby are
the surviving relics of the Golden Gate, Zaborovskyy Gate and Desystynna
