NETCOM: MARKET INFORMATION The Russian telecommunications market has not perceptibly been impacted by the high-tech market downturn in the United States and Europe, and continues to grow. Internet access revenue exceeded $228 million in 2000. All Internet-related activities, including Internet access services, backbone revenues, hosting, and applications, generated $460 million in that year. The industry segment is expected to grow at an annual rate of 15-20 percent in 2001-2003. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) market is very fragmented, with over 300 ISPs in Russia. Fifty ISPs provide Internet access services in Moscow alone. Representing one sixths of Russian ISPs, they generate about 80 percent of total revenue. However, consolidation of regional operators, mergers and acquisitions are taking place. The largest ISPs are Sistema Telecom companies ($42 million revenue), Golden Telecom ($31 million) and Cityline ($18 million), together controlling about 40 percent of the Internet services market. Internet penetration is still low with only 3 million people, or 2 percent of the Russian population, regularly using Internet services. About 10 million people have used the Internet at least once. A low computer penetration rate, poor telecommunications infrastructure, inadequate telecom market liberalization, and lack of capital are stifling the industry development, although some regional infrastructure development projects are on the way. The best sales prospects for U.S. companies range from equipment for high-speed, broadband Internet access, including ISDN, DSL, SDH, to multi-service network technologies. Devices that increase the connection speed will have a strong demand in the market. Powerline communications (PLC) or other alternative technologies might be a good fit for the market. |
